A Low Carbon Home from Low Carbon Homes

Code for Sustainable Homes

The Code for Sustainable Homes was published by Government in December 2006 to bring about a step-change in sustainable home building practice.  It achieves this by setting standards for the key elements of design and construction which affect the sustainability of a new home.

The Code for Sustainable Homes will form the basis for future changes to Building Regulations in relation to carbon emissions from, and energy use in, homes.  It measures the sustainability of a home against design categories, rating the “whole home” as a complete package.  The design categories included within the Code are:

  • Energy/CO2
  • Water
  • Materials
  • Surface water run-off
  • Waste
  • Pollution
  • Health & weel-being
  • Management
  • Ecology
Applying a rating against these design categories, the overall sustainability performance of a home is indicated by a “star” system that communicates the extent to which the requirements of 2006 Building Regulations have been exceeded.

One star is the entry level, reflecting 10% improvement against 2006 Building Regulations, whilst six stars is the highest level, reflecting exemplar development in sustainability terms – dubbed a zero-carbon home for proposed relief from stamp-duty purposes.
